About Us

The Selma-Dallas County Friends of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail Association is the official Friends Association of the Voting Rights National Historic Trail.  The Friends Association members contributed countless hours encouraging and coordinating community involvement in activities relating to shaping and presenting a collective vision for the Trail.  The Friends Association facilitated scores of opportunities for all voices to be heard and incorporated all comments, desires, and recommendations into a final position presented to the United States Department of Interior, National Park Services.

As the Voting Rights Interpretive and Regional Welcome Center develops, the Friends Association shall continue executing its stated mission and purpose.

Mission

The mission of The Selma-Dallas County Friends of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail Association is to commemorate, preserve, interpret, and develop the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail which has been designated as part of the National Historic Trail System.

Purpose

The purpose for which the corporation is organized to:

 

  1.     educate the public about the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, and conditions and activities that led up to and immediately followed the  historic Selma to Montgomery March.
  1. identify and use techniques, procedures, and resources necessary to educate, develop, maintain, and support the development of the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail.
  2. preserve, maintain, and promote the integrity and history of the historical voting rights movement in Selma-Dallas County.
